The Younger Child Syndrome

Being the younger child often appears to be a weakness. You are considered naïve and incapable of succeeding on your own. Not only are you compared with your siblings, but you are also expected to emulate their positive qualities while avoiding their negative ones. But why should we be defined by the conclusions drawn from their actions? Why should our own identity be shaped by the path someone else has already taken? If only siblings were treated equally!
Nonetheless, this very situation can reveal a brighter side, as comparison between siblings can ignite a spark within the younger one. A seemingly insignificant desire to prove the world wrong can gradually transform into a gradually increasing determination to succeed and forge an identity of one’s own.
Had I not developed such a mentality, I might never have had the courage to pursue my dreams. Therefore, it might be declared that I would not be the person I am today if it were not for growing up as the younger sibling. What was once perceived as a disadvantage ultimately became a driving force that taught me to challenge expectations rather than conform to them.
Perhaps this may sound like an exaggeration, nonetheless, I highly believe that living my life to the full is not merely the result of an ambitious attitude, but also the outcome of what I like to call the “younger-child syndrome”. What initially seemed like a disadvantage has, in many ways, become one of the forces that shaped my independence and desire to create my own path.
