Uncertainty

1 min read

"What’re you gonna be?" they keep asking,

With friendly smiles and coffee in hand,

They expect me to tackle this huge thing,

Like I’ve already got it all planned.

They want a title, a clear-cut goal,

A straight path with no twists in sight,

As if at eighteen I should know my role,

And not have a single doubt or fright.

It feels like choosing who I’m gonna be

when I’m still growing into who I am,

or trading in my own uncertainty

just to fit into somebody else’s plan.

So I just nod along and give a quiet reply,

Because it’s easier than saying what I mean,

I don’t need to know every reason why,

I just need time to figure out my dreams.
